Quakers
You may or may not know that Hopkins family members were Quakers. Over the next few blogs, I'll be sharing information about the Quakers and their connection to the Hopkins family. Quakers, or the Religious Society of Friends, are a 17th-century Christian-rooted movement founded by George Fox in England, emphasizing direct, inward experience of God (the "Inner Light") over formal sacraments. Meetings were often held in silent worship. Quakers don't have strict dogma but foc

Town Hall Meetings
Budget Town Halls are held in each of the 7 districts in Anne Arundel County. These are opportunities for anyone to share their thoughts on what the county should focus on when creating the FY27 budget. We have attended two of these meetings so far. Thanks to all who have attended and stood up with us. Sam Hopkins, great, great, great nephew of Johns Hopkins, has been attending with us. Roger and I have been coordinating our speeches with Sam, assuring that we talk about

Graveside Gathering
What a gorgeous day for the annual Johns Hopkins graveside event, with over 30 attendees from across Baltimore and beyond! We are grateful for the moving words shared by Charlie Duff, John Ciekot, and Don Bailey, and for Sam Hopkins’ wreath-laying. As Charlie reminded us, Johns Hopkins considered himself a “first citizen” of Baltimore. And so he was! Wednesday, December 24th was the 152nd anniversary of Johns Hopkins death. Below are photos of the graveside gathering this ye

I made a Podcast!
I had the pleasure of working with the folks at Crab Radio, 104.7, broadcasting from Maryland Hall in Annapolis, to record a podcast episode. Dave and I discussed Johns Hopkins and White's Hall, his birthplace and childhood home. I also talked about our current efforts to save White's Hall, including our time-sensitive petition, which will be submitted next week. I hope you'll take the time to listen. I Met Mr. Paca!!
I had the distinct pleasure to visit with Mr. Paca and his guests at his beautiful home in Annapolis on Saturday for the Yuletide Celebration. Several important Annapolitans were in attendance and much food and drink was shared. You can see below that the dining room table was full of food. We met a couple of the enslaved in the kitchen who told us about how they were preparing the food for the celebration. As entertainment, we enjoyed some beautiful Colonial music. We even

Johns Hopkins Radio Play
During my visit to the Johns Hopkins Library, I found this news article about a new portrait of Johns Hopkins. I also found a radio play script from the Cavalcade of America Radio show on May 26, 1941. The radio play is about Johns Hopkins, his family and friends, and the love of his life his first cousin Elizabeth. When Johns moved into Baltimore to work with his uncle Gerard T. Hopkins he became better acquainted with his first cousin Elizabeth. They fell in love with eac

A Visit to the Johns Hopkins Library 2
Let me share some information I looked at when I visited the Hopkins Family Files at the Johns Hopkins University Library. Something I did not know is that a ship built during World War II was named in honor of Johns Hopkins. SS Johns Hopkins was a Liberty Ship built in Baltimore during World War II. She was named after Johns Hopkins, an American merchant, investor, and philanthropist. Following his death, his bequests founded numerous institutions bearing his name, most no

A Visit to the Johns Hopkins University Library
I had the pleasure of spending more time with Professor Van Morgan. She knows incredible amounts of facts about Johns and his family. This time we visited the Johns Hopkins University Library. We examined the Hopkins family collection of items that can be found there. We looked at the family Bible that belonged to Hanna (johns' Mother) She recorded the births and deaths of her 11 children in this book. There is a lock of hair which is believed to be Hannah's that was added

A Visit to Johns Hopkins University
I had the distinct pleasure to visit JHU and join in on a class that is studying Johns Hopkins, the Founder. The class is taught by Professor Sydney Van Morgan who has become a good support to the Friends of Historic Johns Hopkins House. I visited on a day when she was talking about Johns Hopkins and his time at Whites Hall in Anne Arundel County where he lived until he was 17. As part of my visit, I visited Homewood Historic Home Museum that is located on the campus. A Natio
