Friends of Historic Johns Hopkins House

Welcome!

Welcome to our website! We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit set up to support the saving and restoring of Whites Hall, the birthplace and childhood home of the great philanthropist  Johns Hopkins, located in Gambrills, Maryland. We continue to raise funds to purchase and restore the house and property to its former glory. Our group is currently advocating for either Anne Arundel County or the State of Maryland to purchase the property and enter into a public/private partnership with our nonprofit to ensure the saving of this historic property. We have plans to develop a small community center where people of all ages can enjoy this great historic site.

Check out the "How to Help" tab at the top of the page for information.

Jim Lighthizer, Former County Executive

There is no question in my mind that the Johns Hopkins birthplace site is one of the most significant, historically important unprotected sites not only in Anne Arundel County but in the State of Maryland. The impact he had in helping create one of the world’s premier medical and academic institutions is remarkable. Additionally the example his family set in the 18th century in dealing with the institution of slavery and their support of the Union cause in the 19th century is  also significant. The opportunity to preserve this site for future generations to learn about our American history is something that we must accomplish. We will never have another opportunity quite like this in the Crofton community. We simply must preserve this special.
