In December of 1873 Johns Hopkins became ill. It was said that he had a simple cold and according to the first two Baltimore Sun newspaper articles below he was doing better on December 12th and 13th. His illness then became compounded with an attack of asthma. He died on Christmas Eve 11 days later. His obituary published in the Philadelphia Inquirer on Christmas Day 1873 shows what an incredibly generous man he was.
